Jackson fan fined for pirating music

A GRIEVING Melbourne fan with an ''unhealthy obsession'' for the late Michael Jackson has been convicted and fined $24,000 for pirating the King of Pop's music and DVDs.

Described in court as a caring and likeable, if ''unusual'', man, Matthew Zore's almost lifelong worship of Jackson grew into a lucrative online blackmarket enterprise in Australia and overseas.

Zore, 35, yesterday appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court, which heard that despite his ''predilection'' for Michael Jackson he could become a contributing member of the community.

The hearing was peppered with Jackson-inspired exchanges between magistrate Kate Hawkins, defence lawyer Michael Gleeson and prosecutor Daniel Gurvich who said Zore had demonstrated an unhealthy obsession for Jackson.

''That's a very judgmental comment, Mr Gurvich,'' she responded, and indicated there were those who liked Jackson, but later, when Mr Gleeson went to quote a lyric from Beat It, Ms Hawkins asked: ''Do you have to?''

Police who raided Zore's home after British authorities found his DVDs of bootleg concerts on sale there found 7268 DVDs.

Mr Gurvich said Zore had negligently breached the rights of creative people whose skill and labour produced such work.

Mr Gleeson said the unemployed Jackson fan had always been different and had been affected by the entertainer's death.

Mr Gleeson would not comment about any Jackson obsession or whether it was unhealthy or healthy, but he said his client was ''very, very fond of [Jackson] and his work as an artist''.

None of the pirated work was commercially released material, but came from bootleg recordings, he said.

A psychologist said Zore had not been hell-bent on commercial money-making but he had deposited $631,000 into his bank accounts between 2001 and 2007.

Zore pleaded guilty to six charges, including possessing, making and selling infringing copies.
