George Michael: ‘Jackson Was Stifled By Celebrity Status’
GEORGE MICHAEL is convinced MICHAEL JACKSON’s creativity was stifled by his superstar status, because his hit records tapered off as his fame grew.
The pinnacle of the King of Pop’s success came in the 1980s with the release of his 1982 album Thriller, which remains the singer’s best-selling record. None of Jackson’s subsequent albums ever matched Thriller, which went on to sell more than 100 million copies, and the star’s last studio album, Invincible, sold just over 10 million copies after its release in 2001. And Michael is convinced Jackson, who died in June (09), was unable to tap into the same creative forces in his latter years because his worldwide fame hampered his work. He says, “(Jackson’s death) was sad and a bit surreal, too. Jackson’s influence on the industry was massive and he made some incredible albums, especially in the ’80s. But I do feel there was some lost potential there. Maybe that level of celebrity simply puts a stop to any musical brilliance.” (IANS-WENN) http://trak.in/news/george-michael-j...-status/34826/ |

He's entitled to his opinion. What he said wasn't really BAD. Maybe he just wasn't as impressed by Michael's later work as he was with his earlier work. No need to hate on him
. And I don't think EVERYONE who talks about Michael is "using it to get 15 minutes". That's for people like Joh'Vonnie Jackson, not singers who are already popular. |

I guess he's entitled to his own opinion. Personally, I think Michael's newer music was up to par with his older songs. But to some extent I believe his celebrity status did hamper with his career (with no fault of his own).. he still had sooooo much potential.. the world just didn't give him a chance.

In SOME WAY he's got a point...I mean, we love ALL of Michael's songs..But I have to admit, the Thriller Era was by far his greatest time.
I think Michael was awesome ALL THE TIME. But the Thriller Era was the time where he was practically GOD in the music world! (well..in my opinion.) |

^^ Eh.
The Thriller era may have been the height of his career, but it definitely wasn't the height of his musical talent. He barely even wrote anything on Thriller.Considering George Michael probably isn't a humongous fan of Michael like us, he probably just heard "This Is It" and didn't realize that it wasn't supposed to be released and never was properly polished and tweaked by Michael. If I was just a regular person and I thought that was all Michael had left in him, I'd say the same thing, too. |

Yes we are huge fans of Michael but that is no reason to dislike/hate or bash someone who has different opinions. Everyone is entitled to an opinion you don't have to agree with it as it is what they believe not you.
I don't think any less of George Michael if he did say that. I was once a George Michael hater when I was a kid but now I absolutley love him and personally I prefer George Michael's older music to his last releases. That doesn't mean as I prefer his older stuff that I think any less of him. Also I don't think he said this to get 15 minutes of using Michael's name!! George Michael is amazing and talented and has become famous through hard work and talent he doesn't need to use anyone's name to get noticed. |

You can't really be too upset over what he's said here. He's got his own opinion and he's respectful, so that's fine. However, I do think he's wrong. He shouldn't be comparing how Michael's later albums sold as opposed to Thriller. Besides, the number of copies an album sells doesn't always reflect how talented that artist is. Case and point: Soulja Boy. His song was HUUUUGE, but everyone knows he's got little to no talent at all.
Michael always made amazing music, from the time he was 5 to now. If people's taste in music had changed and they chose not to buy his albums, then that's their loss. 10 million, 100 million, 50 million, whatever. Michael is the greatest entertainer for a reason, whether or not Invincible was as "successful" as Thriller. |

He's entitled to his own opinion, I think. He wasn't bashing Michael, just stating his 80's work was the best.
I personally don't think Michael's Thriller was the best though. |
